velvet
mutineer was set up by Amy in Manchester, UK. On her
year travelling across South America, New Zealand, Australia and
Asia, she accumulated a macpac bursting at the seams with fascinating
bits, pieces, oddities and ideas. After being exposed to various
cultures and traditions, landing back on UK turf was a bit of a
shock, and the thought of another job in front of a computer terminal
didn't quite cut it anymore. It stifled her creative juices, so
she decided to do something about it.
And
velvet mutineer was born! She arrived
onto the cut-throat fashion scene a few years later than most. Nevertheless,
she gathered together the boxes of trinkets she had posted to her
parents’ house from all over the world, littered her room
with a rainbow assortment of cotton and fabrics, dusted off her
grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine, and set to work... |

Carving
out a unique style of eco-chic:
As
an animal lover and vegetarian, the velvet mutineer
decided that it shouldn’t just be coffee, chocolate and other
food products that get to be fairtrade so she began her own search
for regular suppliers of organic, ethically-produced yarns, fabrics
and materials to create her niche market of unique and environmentally-conscious
products. (see materials
for more details).
The
name velvet mutineer tries to emphasise
the ethics behind the company. We want to make it normal for people
to be aware about the origins of the products we buy and use, the
food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the impact is has on global
resources. We can all have a positive impact on our environment
and society just by respecting others, ourselves and future generations.
That's why we're called the velvet mutineer.
We
design and hand craft all our own bags and accessories in London.
When we're not out and about choosing fabrics or dreaming up our
next creation, you might catch us selling our wares on various craft
markets around town. Check the markets
page for more details. |
